The oldest school in Des Moines was originally constructed in 1897 at the site of the current Des Moines Elementary School. The original building was a single large room that taught elementary through high school. After a fire in 1925 the Des Moines School was rebuilt at the same site as the old school. Currently Des Moines Elementary is a part of the Highline School District, and has had additions since 1925. Included in these additions are a library, a gym and a breeze-way annex housing several classrooms. There are 417 students enrolled at Des Moines Elementary in grades K-6 for the 2003-2004 school year.
