- Feb. 15 - Des Moines School opened on Grand Ave. (now 6th Avenue South)
- Sept. 19 - Buenna Post Office opened with Joseph P. Burcey as postmaster.
- Buenna School built on SW 296th Street (c. 1890 - 1982/1893)
- Buenna established, platted by Henry Bucey and Lafayette Rogers.
- Mary Des Moines Williams, first child of European descent, born in Des Moines.

- May - First area church, Des Moines Methodist Episcopal Church, organized by Rev. T. J. Massey. Ladies Aid & Epworth League
also started. In 1889 Rev. Wm. Sampson, president of the Tacoma Preachers Association, supplied the Des Moines Sunday School.

- June 25 - Star Lake post office opened, closed Feb. 28, 1898.

- Lake School District formed and Angle Lake School begun.
- May 5 - A New York stock market collapse sets off a panic plunges the region into a deep economic depression that lasts four years.

- New four room Des Moines School built at current site of Des Moines School.
- Lou Y. Gilbert homestead established at 3280 Star Lake Rd.

- Capt. McDowell, started the McDowell Transportation Company with the "D-Boats", part of the Mosquito Fleet stopping at many places on Puget Sound.

- Feb. 12 - Joseph P. Bucey closed the Buenna post office and opened the Stone's Landing post office. The name was changed to Redondo on Oct. 8, 1904. On Sept. 14, 1963 it became part of the Auburn post office.
