The first Boy Scout Troop in Des Moines was begun on March 17, 1924 by a committee of the Des Moines Methodist Church.

Vernon Draper later went on to receive the Silver Beaver award to honor his Boy Scout work in Des Moines and Kodiak, Alaska.
