Bequests

Your bequest is your wish to have the Des Moines Historical Society benefit from your estate. For example, your will might state that the Des Moines Historical Society is to receive:

  • a percentage of your estate or specific securities, real estate, or other property; or

  • a bequest of all of or a portion of your estate after the payment of specific amounts to other beneficiaries; or

  • a bequest to take effect only if the primary beneficiaries do not survive you.

Sample bequest language: "I give, devise, and bequeath to the Des Moines Historical Society, a nonprofit corporation located in Des Moines, WA, the sum of $_____ (or ___ percent of my estate; or the property described herein) for such purposes as shall be determined by its Board of Directors."

Residuary bequest language: "All the rest, residue, and remainder of my property, both real and personal, and wheresoever situated, I give, devise, and bequeath to the Des Moines Historical Society, a nonprofit corporation located in Des Moines, WA, for such purposes as shall be determined by its Board of Directors."

Life Insurance Gifts

The contribution of a life insurance policy, whether existing or a new one, provides useful tax incentives as well as the opportunity to create a substantial gift, perhaps at a level that otherwise would be impossible.

Two ways to make the Society a beneficiary of your life insurance policy:

  • The Des Moines Historical Society is named as the primary beneficiary to receive part or all of a policy.

  • The Des Moines Historical Society is named as secondary beneficiary to receive part or all of a policy should the primary beneficiary predecease you.
