Des Moines Police Department

Riley W. Denton Jr. was the first acting police chief when the Des Moines Police Station opened in 1959. At that time the police department consisted of a police chief, one trooper, and one vehicle. The first station was in the same building as the old town hall (the Odd Fellows Hall, 730 S. 225th St.) and it was not uncommon for town meetings to be interrupted by loud prisoners who could not be immediately transported to the jail in Seattle. Prisoners were often times hand-cuffed to a chair or support beam, for lack of a proper holding facility, until they could be transferred to Seattle.
